Venti

Venti is an archival file system originally from Plan 9.

Old centaur (2005-2008) is currently running a Venti. It is accessible at tcp!sea.cs.jhu.edu!venti. My goal is to have it take snapshots of /home every morning.

Some initial notes:

In test configuration (one arena partition active, single GigE, data from /home on centaur), we can sustain 5MB/s writing to the Venti.

  • Oldcentaur is connected to the 100Mbps switch; being able to sustain 5MB/s over 100Mbps network writing seems pretty great.

The first 7.43GB backed up from /home fit in 3.90GB on Venti.

Ideas:

  • Activate all of the arena partitions
  • Crossover to manticore for pure liquid speed (maybe)?

We need a story for how to distribute vac files for each snapshot _and_ take advantage of sending only changed blocks... hmmm.

Should the venti server just mount /home via NFS?
